Heidi Shafford, DVM, PhD, DACVAA
Dr. Heidi Shafford is board certified in veterinary anesthesiology and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. She owns and operates Veterinary Anesthesia Specialists, LLC based in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Alaska, Dr. Shafford obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 2000. When Dr. Shafford entered veterinary school she was intent on becoming a dairy veterinarian. Instead, she discovered her passion for alleviating pain in animals and went on to complete residency and graduate training in veterinary anesthesiology and pain management at the University of Missouri. Dr. Shafford attained board certification by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists in 2005.
Inspired to share her anesthesia and pain management knowledge and skills with colleagues, she started an anesthesia consulting practice in 2007. Initially serving the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania veterinary community, Dr. Shafford relocated to Portland, Oregon to be closer to family. Dr. Shafford works with private practices to enhance the comfort of all creatures through education, consultation and patient care. She particularly enjoys teaching veterinary technicians.
In addition to providing anesthesia training and consultation for OVRA, Dr. Shafford is actively involved in clinical practice in the Portland metro area, managing anesthesia for high-risk and fragile patients, and providing pain consultation for chronic pain patients. Dr. Shafford enjoys backpacking, gardening and fishing. She and her husband share their home with two cats, Ace and Mo.
